Top 10 Myths About Facials
Many people have never experienced the pleasure of a facial treatment. Those folks just don’t know what they are missing! A skincare treatment can be a wonderful time for relaxation and taking care of yourself which is quite important these days. There are so many wonderful benefits to receiving facials on a regular basis but equally as many myths. Facials can be a mysterious wonder if you are not familiar with them. Each technician has their own way of performing their facial treatments. Your esthetician may be more focused on one aspect of a skincare routine while another takes more time on something else. Sometimes it takes shopping around to find who you like the best.
So, let’s go over some of the myths people have about facials.
A FACIAL WILL MAKE MY FACE BREAK-OUT True or False?
A little of both. The key word here is “will”. It “might” make your face break out, yes. You see when you have a facial, all the stimulation from deep cleansing, exfoliating, extractions etc., could possibly result in a break-out. This will only happen if you already have problems under the surface of your skin. That doesn’t mean you can see the issues for yourself. You won’t know they are there until you get a facial and the stimulation brings them to the surface. The break-outs were already there. They would have come to the surface eventually by themselves. Your facial treatment just hurried them along.
FACIALS ARE ONLY FOR WOMEN
False! Everyone needs skincare treatments. We all have skin, right? Of course, we all need to take care of our skin. Your teenagers should learn to care for their skin as soon as their faces show signs of early break-outs. The earlier they start skincare treatments, the better off their skin will be down the road. Men need facials also. Most men do not properly care for their skin at home so professional skincare treatments are more important for men.
I CAN’T GET A FACIAL BECAUSE I HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN
This is also false. Sensitive skin is not an excuse for failing to care for your skin. Your face needs attention from a professional. Your technician will have specialized skincare products for all skin types, including sensitive. If you are aware of an ingredient that you normally have a reaction to, it is your responsibility to let your skincare specialist know.
FACIALS AND PROFESSIONAL SKINCARE TREATMENTS ARE TOO EXPENSIVE
I guess this one would kind of vary. The price of a facial or any skincare treatment will usually depend on where you go for it. A spa in a more upscale part of town is likely to charge more than one in a lesser part of town. It would also depend on the type of place you receive your skincare from. A large full-service day spa or a resort spa will normally charge more than a smaller place or a nail place. If you have a cosmetology school close by, you can often receive discounted services there. Of course, you can use coupons, group on, and many spas have loyalty programs. Shop around for the best price.
FACIALS ARE ONLY FOR A LUXURY, FOR ONCE IN A WHILE
False, false, false…. I’m not saying that facials are NOT a luxury, they definitely are! The thing is, that they are a luxury that you need. Facials have benefits other than relaxation. They provide a deep cleanse, exfoliation and fresh oxygen to the surface of your skin.
FACIALS ARE PAINFUL
I want to say false again to this one but, it would depend. There are several factors at play here. When people say that a facial was painful, usually they are speaking of the extractions. During a facial, extractions are done to clean clogged pores. It does take some pressure to get the job done. The area around the nose is usually the more sensitive and this is where most clogged pores are found. Some skincare therapists are gentler than others. Skincare treatments such as an express facial, don’t include extractions. So, this could be true or false.
A FACIAL WILL LEAVE MY FACE RED AND IRRITATED
Yea, it might. During skincare treatments and facials, the skin is massaged. This would bring blood to the surface of the skin. Not through the skin! Your technician may use a facial brush to cleanse, a scrub to exfoliate, products with strong chemicals like glycolic for anti-aging. All these actions will cause stimulation and increased blood flow. If your esthetician performs extractions, that can make your face red. There are many factors involved in a facial that could cause your skin to temporarily appear pink, red or irritated afterward. If you are worried about this, just bring some mineral makeup to apply after your treatment. Call your technician if your face is still red the next day in case you might have had a reaction to a product.
I MIGHT CATCH SOMETHING CONTAGIOUS FROM THE SPA WHILE I GET MY FACIAL
True but, you’re more likely to catch the flu from your buggy at the grocery store. A professionally licensed esthetician is specially trained in areas of contagious diseases, including AIDS and how to prevent the spread of them. You should be safe in your spa. The sheets on the facial table should be changed after each client and clean towels used. All equipment should be properly cleaned and disinfected. Do not feel uncomfortable asking about the disinfection policies of the spa you visit. A technician that properly cares for her clients will not mind talking to you about it.
I’LL GET A FACIAL AND ALL MY WRINKLES WILL BE GONE
No, I’m afraid not. You cannot go into any spa for a skincare treatment and come out looking like a different person. A doctor might can do that for you for a pretty price. Coming to a spa and getting a series of microdermabrasion treatments or chemical peels, can make a difference in your skin’s appearance. Having a facial on a regular basis, like once a month, will over time cause a noticeable change in your skin. It is just not something you can get instantly.
I CAN GET THE SAME RESULTS AT HOME THAT I CAN FROM A PROFESSIONAL FACIAL
False! You cannot get the same results at home. A facial or any kind of skincare treatment performed by a professional is different than what you can do at home. Skincare therapists have access to professional products that you can’t buy as a client. Even if you get your hands on a professional product, it is not a good idea to use something on your face that could damage your skin. Only a trained professional should be using these products. It is difficult to do your own extractions. Your technician has a special magnifying light so she can see things that you don’t even realize are there. Finally, who wants to do their own facial massage? It’s just not the same. Leave it to the professionals.
There you have it. 10 myths about facials explained. I hope this encourages you to go out and find a great esthetician and have yourself an amazing skincare treatment.
